Facts About the San Carlos Indian Reservation

The San Carlos Indian Reservation is home to the Apache. The San Carlos Apache Tribe is a family-friendly community that is 90 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, and has something to offer for everyone. There is fun at the casino including restaurants or you can enjoy some fresh air with a game of golf, hiking, camping, hunting, or fishing.

The Apache are descendants of the Athabascan family who migrated to the Southwest in the 10th century. Over a period of time, many bands of Apache have been relocated to the reservation from their traditional homelands from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, and California. The San Carlos Apache Reservation was established by executive order on November 9, 1871. The San Carlos Apache tribal lands encompass 1.8 million acres of breathtaking land that’s traverse going across three regions of desert, plateau, and mountain country landscapes.

When you visit the reservation, be sure to stop by the San Carlos Apache Culture Center located in Peridot, Arizona on Highway 70, at mile marker 272 on the north side. The Cultural Center is home to over 15,000 members of various bands of Apache. There you can see Peridot jewelry, paintings, carvings, sculptures, and books full of the rich history of the Apache. You will have the opportunity to meet community representatives, “Mountain People” who are descendants of the ancients, Nde, “The People” in person.  The Nde are a unique culture and people living in what we call The Beauty Way, “Walking in Beauty”. There is so much information and a wealth of knowledge that awaits you here at the San Carlos Apache Culture Center.

Be sure to check out the Apache Gold Casino & Resort which is open twenty-four hours a day, every day. It features state-of-the-art reel and video slot machines as well as bingo and table games.
